translate plus creates a video to show our work with Google

For the last seven months, we have been working with Google in an ongoing partnership on their Computer Science First programme (CS First). CS First, which was created three years ago, is “a free programme that increases student access and exposure to computer science (CS) education through after-school, in-school, and summer programmes. All clubs are run by teachers and/or community volunteers”.

E-learning is a great tool for enhancing the studying of any subject; it’s the most interactive forum for conveying a message and it therefore keeps the user engaged, which is especially helpful when working with children. Each CS First club is based on a “real-world theme”, such as Fashion & Design. Through the Fashion & Design theme, “students learn how computer science and technology are used in the fashion industry while building fashion-themed programmes, like a fashion walk, a stylist tool, and a pattern maker”. The students can choose whichever theme they like the most and the course is then delivered through that theme, making the learning experience more enjoyable and their skills more transferrable.

CS First, which is aimed at children between the ages of 9 to 14, has already reached 300,600 students across America; with the help of translate plus, Google’s next step is to target students across Europe. The key target languages for the European roll-out are French, Italian and German. However, this project is not just about translating content, but about transforming the content to engage with each target user. This is where localisation comes in: our team has to take into account cultural differences, specific technical terminology, Google’s brand voice and style, and much, much more to achieve the desired reaction and learning outcome from their users.

Take a look at our video below, which goes into detail about all the work that is going into this project, including translation and localisation, subtitling, transcreation, voiceover, QA checks, Desktop Publishing, video production, animation and more!
