What it is like being a Project Manager at translate plus – an interview

We translate millions of words across translate plus on a daily basis, so operating as effectively and smoothly as possible is crucial to the quality of the end result. Our Project Managers are responsible for exactly that – planning and monitoring various language and localisation projects and ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality translated content. From client communication to final touches on various file formats, they lead the different aspects of the project workflow.

This month we spoke to Project Manager Katerina Pitova, based in our European Support Office in Sofia, Bulgaria , about her experience with leading multiple projects at translate plus, her team and her avid love for languages.

Tell us a bit about your work before joining the translate plus team.

I joined the team a year ago. Prior to that, I was a freelance translator from English to Portuguese. When I was working as a freelance translator, I was able to get a glimpse of the work on the other side – project management. Managing translation projects seemed dynamic and new, and I needed a change, so as soon as I saw the opening for a Project Manager at translate plus, I decided to apply.

What do you like most about your work at translate plus?

Project management at translate plus is just as dynamic as I expected. I don’t translate anymore, but rather, I coordinate the whole process. I like the varied days I have – I can start by talking to different linguists and clients from all around the world, and finish off with preparing translated material in different, new software.

Tell us a bit about your team.

The team I am part of is small, but very close knit. We tend to work together a lot, which helps, especially when facing the challenges each day brings. We share ideas and help each other grow professionally.

Describe the company culture in two words.

Helpful and friendly!

How many languages do you speak?

I speak English and Portuguese fluently, and Bulgarian, of course. I know a little bit of German and I can understand some Spanish. I also have studied Latin, Ancient Greek and Ancient Slavic.

What is one language that you do not yet know, but are looking forward to learning and why?

Like I said before, I understand Spanish, but I cannot speak it, so I really want to change that. I’d also like to learn Italian and French.

Lastly, what do you think is the most essential quality to be a translation project manager?

I think you have to be fast, creative and flexible. You cannot plan every situation that will occur but you always have to find a solution. This is why thinking out of the box is essential. Most importantly, you have to constantly communicate – with the clients, with the linguists and with your colleagues. That’s what the team is all about. We find solutions together.
